Caring for your floors

Carpets

For day to day cleaning, the use of a vacuum cleaner is recommended. Professional cleaning is recommended to prolong the life of the carpet. In the event of a spillage:

  • Loose dirt should be removed with a vacuum cleaner.
  • Dried in dirt can be removed using the back of a knife or similar object and then removed as above.
  • Blot up any liquids using absorbent white cloth or kitchen towel. If necessary, dilute using lukewarm clean water and blot again.

For further advice about dealing with spills, removing stains, and to find a local carpet cleaner, you may wish to contact the National Carpet Cleaners Association (www.ncca.co.uk).

The most-used areas of the carpet - entrances, doorways, traffic lanes, around a favourite chair, etc., are going to collect dirt much faster that the remainder of the carpet. Cleaning these areas when they just begin to look soiled stops the dirt from spreading to the rest of the house and can extend the time between professional cleanings.

The best way to reduce soil accumulation and prolong the life of your carpet is to vacuum frequently, especially in those areas where high levels of traffic are common. For all cut pile carpets we recommend an upright cleaner with an active beater bar to help loosen and lift soil from the pile. Loop pile carpets are best maintained using a suction cleaner to minimise snagging and damaging the loop pile.

Cleaning Vinyl floors

Most Vinyl flooring is low maintenance. A bit of sweeping, regular mopping with soapy water and it's happy.

Stains and scuffs on vinyl are not a big deal - If you have some dried food stains, try rubbing the stain with a mild cream cleaner or a paste of water and bicarbonate of soda. Scuffs can be tackled with a quality pencil eraser, or neat washing up liquid, applied with a cloth - or white spirit, which you'll then need to rinse off.

Cleaning Karndean floors

Regular cleaning with a pH neutral cleaner such as Karndean Clean will help keep your floor at its best. Follow these simple steps for cleaning your Karndean floor:

  • With a soft sweeping brush, remove any loose dirt or dust
  • Add 50ml of Karndean Clean (1 notch represents 50ml) to approximately 8-10 litres of clean water
  • Mop the Karndean Clean solution onto the whole floor, removing any excess liquid.

Then allow your floor to dry before walking on it.
